The Oak Tree. – IGCSE Creative piece

I couldn’t move or speak. I was shivering under my blanket. I was sitting on my great Grandma’s sofa. There was a stench coming from the sofa and it was distracting me from the movie. The only thing modern in her house was a 50 inch flat screen television. Next to me, was a towering window which made an eerie howling sound. I glanced outside I could only just make out the shapeless form of the huge dark oak tree that my great Grandma planted when she was 6 years old.  I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. The Man In Black was closing the distance on the protagonist. Even though I could tell what was going to happen, it was still intense.

I paused the movie and I needed to go to the toilet to release my fear. So I got off my sofa. I instantly felt a chill grip my body. It was strange feeling so I hesitated. When I came out of the darkened living room, I felt something sharp graze my feet. There in front of me was a picture of me and my Grandma lying shattered on the floor. Pieces of glass was all over the room evenly spread out. I didn’t know what to do. So I slowly staggered to the bathroom with a loud sound of my footsteps scrapping my floor on the way there.

Smashing of glass, the banging of pots. I was rooted to the toilet. I was nervous. I found my brother’s beaten up toothbrush, maybe it could cause a bit of damage if used well.

I was ready.

I marched out of the bathroom to see nothing, there was no one there. I walked around and nothing was different. Then a splash of liquid splatted on my nose: I looked up and saw the writing on the wall: ‘Rest In Peace’. I looked at my finger The liquid was red – it was blood.

Gasping for breath, I ran to the door. I tried to open it. It was locked. At that moment I realized it wasn’t a thief, it was a ghost. The only thing I could do was go into my bed, and try to sleep, and forget this ever happened. So I ran as fast as I could to my bedroom. When I got there I locked the door, jumped into my bed and closed my eyes. I couldn’t sleep – I was too anxious. All of a sudden, I heard tapping footsteps in the hallway. I tried to forget it, however I couldn’t get it out of my head. I wriggled out of my bed to look through the minuscule key hole.Squinting up my eyes and staring through it, I saw something I would never think could exist. I saw a tall, dark figure it was just like the oak tree outside. It looked straight at me.I stepped away from the door. I was terrified. What should I do?

Stunned by what I saw, I took several deep breaths and tried to compose myself, trying to figure out my next move. I still didn’t know what to do. In the movie I just watched, the family died, but I didn’t want bring myself down by thinking about that. Suddenly my door banged. I panicked. The door slammed open. A huge black shape, as big as the oak tree outside, stood before me .There it was, a cloaked figure. It walked towards me in a menacing way. I stepped back and fell onto my sofa. It was approaching me, getting nearer and nearer. My heart slammed into my chest like an axe. He glared at me, then he removed his mask. I screamed. Then I ran . Nothing could stop me. I was like a racing car trying to win the Grand Prix, but this time there wasn’t a finishing line.

    Hi Nick,

This is a good start to your creative piece and have created a mood of tension and suspense. You have slowly described the scene but remember that you do not need to tell a hole story, but rather you are describing one part. Look at your opening paragraph in particular and ensure that your sentences flow well. There are a lot of short sentences that start in a similar way. This creates a very stunted flow.
